Wedding Hair Styling: Choosing the Perfect Bridal Hair Style

Are you like most brides when it comes to choosing a hairstyle for your wedding day?
Often brides are confident in how they want their makeup to look, but bridal hairstyling is a whole different ball game!
No doubt you have been growing your hair so you have enough length for the perfect bridal hairstyle but then you are faced with dilemma of how to manage your hair on the big day.
Your hairstyle is a key part of your overall look and it has to:

  • Suit your face shape
  • Suit your dress
  • Look amazing for 12 plus hours
  • Handle all weather conditions
  • Work with a veil or hair jewellery
  • Be comfortable to wear

Having A Hair Trial

If you are unsure about your hairstyle, booking in for a trial is where we can quickly get you on the right path. Together we can work out what is going to work best with EVERYTHING that goes into choosing the right bridal hairstyle.
We do ask that you do some home work and gather inspiration from various sources, like Google or social media. You might even want to experiment with a few styles before the big day. We both want to pick a hairstyle that reflects who you are while also complementing your features. It’s also very important that you look at all the types of hairstyles we have done across our social media platforms and website to get a feel for our aesthetic. If you cannot see a similar hairstyle to what you are after, it does not mean we can’t or don’t do it, we just may not have put up a photograph, so always check with us.

Working Out Your Perfect Bridal Hair Style

Lets get the process started to narrow down what sort of hairstyle is going to work best for YOU on YOUR wedding day.
Things we need to consider:

  • Hair length and hair type
  • Hair colour
  • Wedding dress style – Neckline and backline
  • Veil Placement
  • Weather Conditions
  • Comfort Levels

Hair Length

Your hair type and length are key to choosing the best style so lets be totally frank about what is realistic when it comes to hair styles.

Long hair – Longer is not better!
When hair is too long it is heavy and heavy hair pulls hair straight. Long hair can also be difficult to keep in place as more pins are required to keep it firmly anchored and a lot of hair will mean your hairstyle is more bulky.

Medium Length – Usually the best length!
Hair styles work best when their are different lengths around the face. Having shorter framing pieces looks softer and the hair will hold its shape.
If more length is required, it is as easy as adding some clip in extensions. Clip is will also hold curl better than your own hair and we can also pre prep the clip ins so they are curled and ready to be placed in your hair and then combed out.

Short Hair – Not a problem!
Short hair can be left to be short and sassy OR we can perform our magic and add hair extensions or hair pieces to create the wedding hair style you want without having to grow your hair for 12 plus months!. As long as we have a little bit of length to pin and sculpt your hairline so it appears that all your hair is pinned up – we can do almost anything!

Hair Texture – Smooth, Silky, Curly or Frizzy

If your dream is to have soft curls that last all day and your hair thick, heavy and a solid one length cut down to your waist and silky virgin hair – You may not be able to have soft curls that last all day.
For this style to work, you need layers so your hair is lighter and can stay in place and not be pulled down. Soft silky virgin hair is terrible at holding its shape so you may need to consider adding some colour to your hair so the hair is not so silky smooth.

And the same can be said if you have naturally frizzy hair and you want a smooth sleek down style – It may not stay smooth looking unless you are prepared to do Keratin smoothing treatments in the lead up to your big day. Also if it is a hot humid day or rain is on the forecast, it’s always safer to go with your natural curl or an upstyle.

Your hair texture is key to what kind of hair style is going to last.

Hair Colour

Often a bride with darker hair will come to us with an image of a blonde bride and ask for the same style and this is where you need to remember that blonde or lighter hair colours show all the intricate details. Dark hair does not show up the details so you will either need to have your hair lightened, or just stay focused on your hairstyles profile or shape rather than searching for the details. This type of conversation with your hair stylist is vital.
We need to know your ideas and address any concerns you have. By collaborating closely, we can create your stunning bridal look that you’ll love.

Incorporating Your Wedding Dress And Style

The first thing we start asking is what sort of style or theme will you be following?
Is it going to be a Gatsby Style wedding, a Boho theme or something sleek and elegant. We can then quickly look at these type of hair styles and then figure out how your hairstyle, dress and veil will work in together.
Does your dress have a plunging back that you want to show off?
Then your hair may need to to be out of the way and pinned up.
Does your dress have an intricate shoulder detail?
Your hair may need to be pushed over to the side so that this detail can be seen.
Is your dress strapless?
Often this works well with hair that is left down
Do you have a halter neck?
This type of neck line almost always suits an upstyle so that the neck line and neck can be a focal point. An upstyle will make your neck look longer.

Your wedding theme and dress style greatly influences your hairstyle choice.

Wedding Veils Or Hair Jewelry

Some brides will have a veil to only please their mum and will want to be taking it out as soon as the ring in on her finger. Other brides love the idea of a veil and plan on wearing it all night.
There is no wrong or right way when it comes to veils – But there are some key things to consider!

All hair accessories should elevate your hairstyle. Decide early if you want a veil, flowers, or hairpins. Think about how these will match your dress and overall theme.

When choosing accessories, consider your hair type and style.
For example, delicate pins work well when they are scattered throughout a style. You will need enough to make sure they are seen as a statement. Bigger clips are perfect to be used to hold hair into place and they look perfect when placed on a side to hold hair flat or when they are positioned in amongst a hair style as a statement piece.

Veils and where do they go!
You will either wear a veil above your hairstyle or they are positioned under your hairsyle.
Veils are also a rough fabric. When a veil is worn over a hairstyle, it will rub and tousle the hair underneath – so be prepared that a veil will move against your hairstyle.

Hair Styles And The Weather

Plan ahead for weather conditions to ensure your hair stays beautiful all day long.

  • Summer: Keep it light and airy with loose buns or braids.
  • Winter: A sleek style may offer more control against wind or rain.

Are you getting married outside?
You will need to be prepared for the wind, if you hate hair on your face, then consider how you will keep your hair in place so you are not picking hair out of your lipstick all ceremony.
Any type of wind will also move your hair around so consider how you can keep it in place with either pinning it all up or having a half up hairstyle with your some of your hair secured.

Your Comfort Levels

Do you get hot and bothered?
Are you getting married in summer and the thought of being in a long dress and having heavy hair on your neck is already stressing you out?
Then you know you will need to have a hairstyle that will not annoy you further.

Do you get headaches?
This is really important to know – Some brides have sensitive scalps and heavy hair or tightly styled hair or numerous pins can cause a headache. When having a trial you must consider your comfort levels – you do not want to be battling a massive headache because your veil or a clip is not positioned correctly.

Working With a Professional Wedding Hairstylist

Choosing a skilled hairstylist is key. Look for a bridal hair and makeup team like Hollywood Brides who specialise in bridal hairstyling.
Schedule a trial well in advance and have some ideas and pictures of styles you like.
At the trial we will discuss your hair type and length for the best options and set out what you will need to have prepared before your wedding day – Communication is vital, so speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

Trial Runs and Final Touches

A trial run is essential for perfecting your bridal look.
During the trial, we will discuss the key points to consider and look at the different styling options and accessories. Once we have a plan we can work out your hairstyle and what is required to have it looking exactly how you can imagine it.
On your wedding day we can tweak the style to work in with any changes that are required.
